Schedule announced for papal visit to Georgia, Azerbaijan: September 30- October 2

The Vatican has announced the schedule for a trip by Pope Francis to Georgia and Azerbaijan, beginning on September 30.

The Holy Father will leave Rome that Friday morning, arriving in Tbilisi, Georgia in the mid-afternoon. After an airport greeting ceremony and a courtesy visit to the presidential palace, he will address civil and diplomatic officials. Then he will meet with Catholicos Illia II of the Georgian Orthodox Church, and finish the day with a meeting with the Chaldean Catholic community.

On October 1 the Pontiff will celebrate Mass at an outdoor stadium in Tbilisi, when meet with priests and religious and with charity workers.

On Sunday, October 2, the Pope will fly from Tbilisi to Baku, Azerbaijan. He will celebrate Mass at the church of the Immaculate Conception in Baku, then make a courtesy call at the presidential palace and visit a monument to victims of the battle for independence. In the afternoon he will meet with the nation's leading Muslim official, then participate in an inter-religious gathering before his return flight to Rome that evening.
