Indian cardinal asks faithful to tone down feast-day celebrations

Cardinal George Alencherry, the Major Archbishop of the Syro-Malabar Catholic Church, has asked for moderation of church festivals.

The Indian cardinal said that extravagant feasts and displays distract attention from worship; he observed that it is difficult to maintain a prayerful attitude while firecrackers are exploding and vendors are shouting for attention. He also questioned the practice of cooking and eating meals on the grounds of churches.
