English bishop fears 'Brexit' would endanger funds for Catholic charities

June 03, 2016

An English bishop has argued against the "Brexit" initiative to remove Great Britain from the European Union, saying that the move would endanger funding for Catholic charities.

Bishop William Kenny, an auxiliary of the Birmingham archdiocese, said: "The EU is very much in need of reform, but we have got to reform every organization from the inside; you will never reform it from outside."

Bishop Kenny said that Caritas Europa, the umbrella organization for Catholic charitable agencies, "always negotiates for funding frmo teh EU, and the UK, should it decide to leave, will be outside of that."

Has this bishop never heard the maxim "He who pays the piper calls the tune" . The Church should not rely on funds from organisations such as the EU which often come with strings attached. And besides, if God wants a job done, He will sort out the funding without the need to go begging from secular organisations with a dodgy agenda.

When will our Bishops return to the Catholic position of making decisions based on what is good, right, moral, etc instead of how will the money might be affected? Statements and decisions such as this are how Government officials know how to control our Church. Apparently our Bishops make decisions based on the money! Nothing in the statement mentions what would be best for Great Briton or the British Catholic Church -- just the money!

“Obviously, there are Catholics who no doubt will be voting to leave, and I hope and presume that they have good reason to,” he said. (Bishop Kenney). You bet your sweet life we have good reason to, Bishop! If we do not control our own country and its borders, we can drop the farce of Britain being a free, independent and democratic nation. Can anyone imagine the United States, for example, freely voting to dump its independence? Neither should we, Bishop Kenney!
