Vatican meeting on sexual violence in war
May 24, 2016
The British embassy to the Holy See and the Pontifical Council for Justice and Peace sponsored a meeting for members of religious orders on sexual violence in areas of conflict.
As participants discussed the care of survivors and advocacy for justice, a Capuchin friar who ministers in the Democratic Republic of the Congo said that 300 women are assaulted daily in his region of the nation.
“I spoke today to a number of Catholic religious men and women from religious congregations who are frequently the only ones on the ground during and long after conflicts have ended,” said the British prime minister’s Special Representative on Preventing Sexual Violence in Conflict, Baroness Anelay. “Their sheer determination and commitment is commendable.”
