Pope will visit Ireland in 2018

May 19, 2016

Pope Francis has agreed to visit Ireland in 2018, Archbishop Diarmuid Martin of Dublin has announced.

The Irish prelate had invited the Pontiff to participate in the World Meeting of Families, which will be held in Dublin in 2018. Archbishop Martin has reported that the Pope promised he would attend-- or "if I don't come, my successor will come."

The papal trip to Ireland could also provide the occasion for a visit to Northern Ireland. St. John Paul II had intended to visit Northern Ireland in 1979, but curtailed his visit to the Irish republic because of the tense political situation in the north.
