Jesuit-run university to honor dissident South African bishop

May 05, 2009

The Jesuit-run University of San Francisco will confer commencement honors upon a South African Catholic bishop who has broken with Church teaching to endorse condom use as a means of curbing the spread of AIDS. Bishop Kevin Dowling-- whose views have been rejected by the South African bishops' concerences and the apostolic nuncio in that country-- "has become a champion of dissent," noted Patrick Reilly, the president of the Cardinal Newman Society, and the university's decision to honor him suggests "approval for his dissent and encourages division in the Church."
