Pope's zucchetto sold at charity auction for over $18,000

April 28, 2016

A zucchetto worn by Pope Francis has sold for $18,190 on auction.

The funds from the auction, conducted on the Catawiki site, will go to Save the Child’s Heart, an Israeli charity that serves children in the developing world.

The winning bid was only a bit more than half the price that was commanded by another zucchetto worn by the Pontiff, which was auctioned on Ebay in 2014 with a winning bid of close to $35,000. Auction experts said that the price drop might be attributable to the fact that Pope Francis has donated several of the skullcaps to charity, thus increasing the available supply.
