Computer hackers have blocked access to the web site operated by the Catholic bishops of Sri Lanka, at a time when the bishops' site was calling attention to the dangers facing civilians trapped between government troops and the forces of the Tamil Tiger rebels. Although the identity of the hackers is not known, some Church officials suspect allies of the government, noting that the bishops have been critical of the army for failing to safeguard non-combatants. (Some bishops have criticized the Tamil Tigers, too, for using civilians as 'human shields.')
