Pope appoints new nuncio to United States

April 12, 2016

Pope Francis has appointed Archbishop Christophe Pierre as apostolic nuncio to the United States of America.

Archbishop Pierre succeeds Archbishop Carlo Maria Viganò, who has served in the position since 2011 and reached the retirement age of 75 in January. The choice of Archbishop Pierre as the new Vatican envoy in Washington had been widely anticipated.

Born in France in 1946, Archbishop Pierre was ordained a priest of the Archdiocese of Rennes in 1970. He has served as apostolic nuncio to Haiti (1995-99), Uganda (1999-2007), and Mexico (2007-16).
