Angolan bishops denounce government corruption, control of media

April 01, 2016

The Catholic bishops of Angola have released a strongly worded pastoral letter denouncing corruption in public administration.

A decline in oil prices is only one cause of a spike in the poverty rate in the African country, the bishops wrote. They pointed to "a lack of ethical standards, mismanagement of the public pruse and generalized corruption" in government. The letter took note of a "mentality of cronyism and nepotism," and accused government officials of neglecting serious problems with public health.

The pastoral letter also accused government officials of "worrying partisanship" in their control of the media. They said that Radio Ecclesia, a Catholic broadcaster, has been subjected to serious restraints, while outlets favorable to the government are free of controls.
