Italy now only half-Catholic, poll says
April 01, 2016
Only about half of Italy's people identify themselves as Catholic today, according to a new poll published by L'Unita newspaper.
Although Catholics still represent by far the largest single religious bloc in Italy, the proportion of Catholics in the country's population has been dropping. The survey found that 20% of respondents decribed themselves as atheists, while a roughly equal number professed vaguely Christian or theist beliefs. The survey found smaller groups of respondents identifying themselevs as Orthodox or Protestant (4% each), Buddhist (2%), Jewish, Hindu, or Muslim (1% each).
