Irish primate: recover the principles of the 1916 proclamation
March 15, 2016
As Ireland celebrates the 100th anniversary of the Easter Rising that led to the country's independence, Archbishop Diarmuid Martin of Dublin has questioned whether the people of Ireland today hold the same principles that sustained the rebels of 1916.
"We have to ask how those who fought in 1916 for Irish independence would judge us and our society today," the archbishop told an audience in Cork. He called for an end to exploitation, consumerism, and waste, and argued that believers and secularists "must learn again how to speak with one another constructively and respect one another."
