Boston's Cardinal O'Malley praises Spotlight, notes media role in exposing sex-abuse crisis
March 01, 2016
Boston's Cardinal Sean O'Malley has issued a statement praising the Oscar-winning film Spotlight as "an important film for all impacted by the tragedy of clergy sexual abuse."
Writing in Boston's archdiocesan newspaper, the Pilot, Cardinal O'Malley said that "the media led the Church to acknowledge the crimes and sins of its personnel and to begin to address its failings." He added: "The media's role in revealing the sexual abuse crisis opened a door through which the Church has walked in responding to the needs of survivors."
In his statement the cardinal went on to describe the programs the Church has inaugurated to protect children and punish abusers.

The Cardinal told the truth in his statement about Spotlight's awards, showing us again why his standing is so high among honest members of the media. The Catholic hierarchy needs to forget about PR in a country that no longer trusts its leaders, and follow the example of Jesus by always telling the truth, even when it hurts.

"Boston's Cardinal Sean O'Malley has issued a statement praising the Oscar-winning film Spotlight as 'an important film for all impacted by the tragedy of clergy sexual abuse.'" The more things change, the more they remain the same. Homosexuality was the reason for the horror done to our children, just as it still is in all other institutions and even some cultures, but neither the film nor the Cardinal had the courage to say so directly.
