Dominican bishops issue election statement

As the Dominican Republic’s May 2016 elections approach, the nation’s bishops have called upon voters to shun bribes and political patronage and “be zealous and vigilant toward our democracy.”
The bishops called upon citizens to seek a government that “strengthens democracy, which serves the common good … developing the economy, strengthening the system of health and education.”
The bishops also called for respect for human life and attentiveness to environmental concerns.
The Caribbean nation of 10.0 million is 88% Catholic.
