Prominent US curial official named nuncio

February 09, 2016

Pope Francis has appointed Msgr. Peter Wells, a Tulsa priest who has served as Assessor for General Affairs of the Vatican’s Secretariat of State since 2009, as the apostolic nuncio to South Africa and Botswana.

The Holy See Press Office also announced on February 9 that Msgr. Wells is being raised to the dignity of an archbishop.

As Assessor for General Affairs, Msgr. Wells served as the chief assistant to the Substitute for General Affairs, the archbishop responsible for the internal work of the Roman Curia.

The two leading officials who work under the Secretary of State (since 2013, Cardinal Pietro Parolin) are the Substitute for General Affairs (since 2011, Archbishop Giovanni Angelo Becciu) and the Secretary for Relations with States (since 2014, Archbishop Paul Richard Gallagher).
