French leftists press for universal ban on surrogacy

February 05, 2016

Decrying the exploitation of women, especially those in impoverished nations, a coalition of self-described leftists in France, including pro-abortion and lesbian organizations, is pressing for an international ban on surrogacy.

In a front-page column in the Vatican newspaper, Italian journalist and historian Lucetta Scaraffia said that “it is the first occasion that the left dares to speak against the progressivist lobby, without fear of being associated with groups judged conservative.”

Scaraffia recalled that La Manif pour tous—the French coalition against same-sex marriage—earlier denounced surrogacy, which the Catechism of the Catholic Church teaches is gravely immoral (no. 2376).
