In the Caucasus, bishop blesses a holy door in an open field

January 14, 2016

Facing bureaucratic roadblocks to the construction of a church, a bishop has blessed a holy door for the jubilee year of mercy in an open field in Rustavi, the fourth-largest city in Georgia.

Bishop Giuseppe Pasotto told the Italian Episcopal Conference’s radio network that for the last three years, local Catholics have sought approval for construction of a church dedicated to Divine Mercy, but the local mayor has refused to sign the necessary paperwork.

The nation of 3.7 million is 84% Orthodox, 10% Muslim, and 2% Catholic.
