Papal appeal on behalf of Cuban migrants in Central America
December 28, 2015
Following the recitation of the Angelus in St. Peter’s Square on December 27, Pope Francis issued an appeals on behalf of an estimated 5,000 Cubans on the border of Costa Rica and Nicaragua.
The Cubans are seeking to enter into the United States via Central America, but the government of Nicaragua, a Cuban ally, is refusing them entry.
“My thoughts in this moment go out to the numerous Cuban migrants who find themselves in difficulty in Central America, many of whom are victims of human trafficking: I invite the countries of the region to renew with generosity all necessary efforts in order to find a rapid solution to this humanitarian drama,” the Pope said.
