Pope-emeritus Benedict will join in ceremony for opening of Holy Door

December 07, 2015

Pope-emeritus Benedict will participate in the December 8 ceremony for the opening of the Jubilee Year of Mercy.

The retired Pontiff, at the invitation of Pope Francis, will attend the opening of the Holy Door on Tuesday, December 8. He will not take part in the preceding Eucharistic celebration in St. Peter’s Square.

Since his resignation in February 2013, Benedict has appeared in public only rarely, when invited by Pope Francis. His last ceremonial appearance was in February 2015, for the consistory at which Pope Francis appointed new cardinals.
