President Aquino of Philippines meets with Pope

December 04, 2015

Pope Francis met on December 4 with President Benigno Aquino of the Philippines.

A brief Vatican statement released after the meeting indicated that the conversation had centered on the prospects for peace in the Mindanao region, where Islamic separatists are battling for autonomy. There was also a discussion of more general international affairs, including the danger of climate change and the UN conference in Paris on that topic.

President Aquino also spoke with the Pontiff about Church-state relations, which in recent years have sometimes been contentious in the Philippines.
