Activists press El Salvador to re-open investigation into killing of US missionaries

December 02, 2015

On the anniversary of the slaying of four American missionaries in El Salvador, human-rights activists have urged that country’s government to re-open an investigation of their deaths.

Maryknoll Sisters Maura Clark and Ita Ford, Ursuline Sister Dorothy Kazel, and lay missionary Jean Donovan were raped and murdered on December 2, 1980. Four members of the National Guard were convicted of the killings in 1984, and sentenced to 30-year prison terms. But human-rights activists argue that the convicts’ superiors, who evidently endorsed the murders, have never been brought to justice.
