English cardinal: use of military force against Islamic State is justifiable

December 02, 2015

England’s leading Catholic prelate has called for “effective action,” including the use of military force, to stop the growth of the Islamic State.

Speaking before a debate in Parliament on a proposal for British air strikes on the Islamic State, Cardinal Vincent Nichols of Westminster called for action to prevent “the grave harm being inflicted” by the Islamic jihadists on innocent civilians in Syria. “While indiscriminate violence is never justifiable, specific use of force to protect the vulnerable is defensible, if it is combined with sustained diplomatic and humanitarian efforts,” he said.

Cardinal Nichols said that he saw four priorities for building peace in Syria and Iraq: ending the indiscriminate violence; clearing mines and explosive devices; restoring the rule of law; and establishing trust across tribal and religious lines.
