Ukrainian president meets with Pope; Vatican calls for peaceful resolution of conflict

November 20, 2015

Pope Francis met on November 20 with President Petro Poroshenko of Ukraine, and argued strongly for a political resolution of that country’s current conflict.

A brief Vatican statement released after the meeting called for “full implementation of the Minsk accords.” The statement expressed concern for the “humanitarian crisis” created by continued fighting in Ukraine, and highlighted the importance of ensuring access to the battle zones for charitable agencies bringing help to those affected.

During the meeting—and a subsequent meeting between the Ukrainian leader and Archbishop Paul Gallagher, the Secretary for Relations with States—there was also a discussion of the important social role played by the Catholic Church, including both the Latin and Byzantine Catholic communities.

There'll be a political solution if Putin pulls his army out and gets out of Ukraine and allows Ukraine to live in peace as Ukraine, making whatever deals, treaties and agreements with whomever they please,as benefits Ukraine and its people, and not as benefits him and Russia. Ukraine must be free and independent, no longer under the Russian boot! For the Pope to tell the victim and the batterer equally to make peace is ridiculous: Ukraine will stop fighting the moment it ceases to be assaulted!
