Invest more in development to foster peace, Holy See diplomat urges UN

November 19, 2015

As the United Nations Security Council conducted a debate on the root causes of conflict, the Holy See’s representative, Archbishop Bernardito Auza, called for a greater international investment in development in order to prevent war.

In his November 17 statement, the prelate spoke of the need to “break down silos that treat development, peace and security and human rights as separate tasks.”

“Development projects, which could help prevent conflicts, must come first and could substantially lessen future expenses on peacekeeping operations,” he added. “Resources spent on peacekeeping operations should be shifted to development projects as soon as possible once situations start to stabilize.”
