Hate crimes against Christians are underreported, Vatican representative tells OSCE

November 17, 2015

The Vatican's representative at OSCE offices in Vienna has said that crimes perpetrated against Christians are often not reported or categorized as "hate crimes."

Msgr. Janusz Urbanczyk said that the available statistics "imply that the hate crimes against members of religions, and especially against Christians, are certainly more numerous than those indicated" in official reports. He said that the under-reporting could be due to the fact that "hate crimes" are reported only when the victims are members of minority groups. He observed that members of a majority can also be the target of hate crimes, including crimes based on anti-religious motives.
