Pope lauds international coalition against human trafficking

October 30, 2015

In a message to the Santa Marta group, an international alliance set up to combat human trafficking, Pope Francis has traced the progress of the initiative and promised his continuing support for the effort to “free the victims of new forms of slavery, rehabilitate them, along with the imprisoned and the marginalized, unmasking the traffickers and those who create this market.”

The Santa Marta group, which Pope Francis set up last year, brings together religious leaders and police officials from various nations. The group is meeting this week in Spain, at the invitation of Queen Sofia.

In his message called attention to international pledges to work for the eradication of human trafficking, including a statement issued by mayors meeting at the Vatican in July, and the UN’s approval of Sustainable Development Goals that included a bid to end all forms of slavery, child labor, and human trafficking.
