Central African Republic: archbishop says reports of kidnapping are false

October 28, 2015

Archbishop Dieudonné Nzapalainga of Bangui, in the Central African Republic, has said that reports he was kidnapped are inaccurate.

The archbishop told the Fides news service that when he and other members of a Church delegation visited the central mosque in Bangui, the nation's capital, to prepare for a visit by Pope Francis in November, they were "threatened verbally" by a group of young people, but not assaulted. The incident "blew out of proportion" because of exaggerated press reports, Archbishop Nzapalainga said. He added that the leader of the Muslim community apologized for the confrontation outside the mosque.
