Italian court rules against same-sex marriage

The Italian Council of State, which has jurisdiction over the administrative acts of government officials, has ruled against mayors who defied national law by registering same-sex marriages in city registers.

A lower court had upheld the decision of the mayors of Rome, Milan, Naples, and other cities to recognize same-sex marriages that took place outside Italy.
“Marriage between two people of the same sex is not contemplated under Italian law,” said Minister of the Interior Angelino Alfano, who welcomed the new ruling. “Therefore the transcriptions made by local mayors are illegal.”
