Pope releases message for 2016 World Youth Day in Krakow

September 28, 2015

Pope Francis has released his message for the 31st World Youth Day, which will be celebrated in July 2016 in Krakow.

The theme for the Krakow celebration is “Blessed are the merciful, for they shall obtain mercy.” In his message the Pope stressed the link between World Youth Day and the Jubilee Year of Mercy, and encouraged young people to be instruments of mercy.

The Pope pointed to the example of Blessed Pier Giorgio Frassati, and cited his words: “Jesus pays me a visit every morning in Holy Communion, and I return the visit in the meager way I know how, visiting the poor.”

The papal message also remarked on the roles played by Sts. John Paul II and Faustina Kowalska—two saints closely associated with Krakow—whom he described as “apostles of mercy.” He said that the Divine Mercy message popularized by St. Faustina is “a very specific life plan” because it entails action—putting works of mercy into practice.
