English cardinal weighs joining House of Lords

Cardinal Cormac Murphy-O'Connor, who recently stepped down as Archbishop of Westminster, is uncertain whether he should accept an invitation to membership in the House of Lords. The cardinal said that Prime Minister Gordon Brown is inclined to offer seats in the House of Lords to Catholic, Jewish, and Muslim religious leaders. He notes, however, that his predecessor, the late Cardinal Basil Hume, declined such an invitation, believing that he could have greater influence outside Parliament.
