'Everyone is required' to take action against climate change, Pope says

September 11, 2015

Pope Francis said that “the issue of climate change is a matter of justice,” in a September 11 audience with participants in a meetings sponsored by the Foundation for Sustainable Development.

“We must not forget the grave social consequences of climate change,” the Pope said, noting that the poor are most seriously affected. Action to combat climate change, he said, is “our duty to humanity as a whole, and in particular the poorest and future generations.”

“Everyone is required to contribute” to the fight against climate change, the Pope continued, saying that success “can only be the fruit of a joint effort.” He said that the “emergency” of climate change should prompt effective action, particularly when the UN approves its Sustainable Development Goals and when international leaders meet in Paris in December to discuss the issue.

In the quest for a worldwide campaign, the Pope assured his audience that they could “count on my personal support and that of the Church.”

Almost all of the climate scientists agree that carbon dioxide emitted by humans is causing warming. I can't think of any sort of cabal or collection of vested interests that would be paying off these scientists to alter their conclusions. Why do so many conservatives, including many faithful Catholics, have such a hard time with global warming?

I'm curious to know if the Vatican's entire electric power needs are now supplied by solar means?

We've had another absence of hurricane threats in the Atlantic basin season. After Katrina and a couple of rough years the experts warned of more to come. Global warming is to cost us tens of billions in the form of these new super hurricanes making landfall in unprecedented fashion. Hasn't happened. The Church faces emergencies today. Lives are threatened today. Institutions likewise. Cardinals speak of schism. Some speak of tempests, not over oceans, but among themselves. Sustainable?

The Pope's advisers have bought the lie that anthropogenic activity causes climate change, and its corollary, that modifying such activity can slow or reverse the effects of climate change. This position is heavily politicized, to the point that such government agencies as NOAA are fudging their data to support obama's position. This is far from settled science, and the draconian, arbitrary restrictions EPA will force will have no significant effect--other than to harm economically the poor.

Since this is NOT a matter of faith AND morals, I respectfully disengage from the Church on this most Unscientific but most political, statement. The Church just can't seem to get science right; this is major strike number 3 and, well, you're out.

This assumes of course that man-made global warming is an absolute fact which is a disputed point hence I respectfully listen to a papal opinion on a scientific question an opinion I do not share.
