As belligerents in the nation’s 20-month civil war signed a peace agreement, South Sudan’s leading prelate exhorted priests not to give political homilies.
Stating that priests “are almost becoming political people,” Archbishop Paolino Lukudu Loro of Juba called upon priests to “preach the word of God without condemning people,” according to a Radio Bakhita paraphrase of his remarks.

Some members of the USCCB are also becoming political people. The people in the pews are also waiting for them to preach the word of God as it applies to this time and this place. The nonstop, noncontroversial homilies about the application of Scripture to life 2,000 years ago may be noncontroversial, but the Scriptures need to be applied to real life to be meaningful.
