Pope pays tribute to Brother Roger of Taizé

August 20, 2015

Pope Francis has written a message to the ecumenical monastic community of Taizé in which he paid tribute to its founder, Brother Roger (1915-2005), ten years after his murder.

Quoting a 2012 address by his Pope Benedict XVI, Pope Francis called Brother Roger “a tireless witness to the Gospel of peace and reconciliation, ardently committed to an ecumenism of holiness.”

“By the perseverance he demonstrated during his long life, he helped to change relations among still-separated Christians, tracing for many a path of reconciliation,” Pope Francis added.

Pope Francis also recalled Brother Roger’s devotion to Sacred Scripture and the Fathers of the Church, to youth, and to the poor and disadvantaged.
