Church-state battle looms in Cleveland over historic church interiors

Five of Cleveland’s 17 Catholic parishes with landmark status have been slated for closure. The city council is considering expanding landmark protection-- which shields exteriors from demolition-- to interiors. A diocesan spokesman called the proposed legislation “nothing short of an attempt to exert direct government control over the very symbols and elements utilized by the Church in its most sacred and defining act of worship: the Mass.”
