Mary is the ‘great believer,’ Pope says in Assumption address

August 17, 2015

The Blessed Virgin Mary is the “great believer,” Pope Francis said during his Angelus address on August 15, the Feast of the Assumption.

“At the conclusion of her earthly life, the Mother of Christ was raised in soul and body to heaven, that is, in the glory of eternal life, in the full communion with God,” the Pope said to those who had gathered in St. Peter’s Square.

Reflecting on the Gospel reading (Lk. 1:39-56), Pope Francis said that “faith is the heart of the whole history of Mary; she is the believer, the great believer.”

“Our life, seen in the light of Mary’s Assumption into heaven, is not a wandering without meaning, but a pilgrimage that, with all its uncertainties and sufferings, has a sure destination: the house of our Father, who awaits us with love,” he added. “It is beautiful to think of this: that we have a Father who awaits us with love, and that also our Mother Mary is there and she awaits us with love.”
