Details emerge on Pope's role in restoring US-Cuba ties

Cardinal Jaime Ortega y Alamino of Havana made an unannounced visit to the White House, and hand-delivered a letter from Pope Francis to President Barack Obama, to open the negotiations that led to a resumption of diplomatic ties between the US and Cuba.
In the letter, the Pope said that he would be willing to “help in any way possible” to improve relations between the two countries. The Pontiff was reportedly answering a request from the Obama administration, which had been relayed through Cardinal Sean O’Malley of Boston and retired Cardinal Theodore McCarrick of Washington.
