Indian government may ban Muslim practice of instant divorce

August 13, 2015

The Indian government’s Ministry of Women and Child Development, according to a Guardian report, is considering a ban on the Muslim practice that allows a man to divorce his wife instantly by saying three times, “I divorce you.”

A survey conducted by the Bhartiya Muslim Mahila Andolan (Indian Muslim Women’s Movement) found that 92% of India’s Muslim women oppose the practice, according to The Indian Express.

“Look at dowry deaths in Hindu women,” an official of the All India Muslim Personal Law Board said in response to the survey. “The Islamic system allows couples a chance of coming out of a bad relationship. Other religions do not do so easily.”

13% of India’s 1.252 billion people are Muslim.
