UN defeats bid to list abortion, gay rights among Sustainable Development Goals

August 03, 2015

The goals were approved on August 2 after tense round-the-clock discussions in which developed nations, led by the US and the European Union, pressed for adoption of language that would specifically endorse legal abortion and homosexual rights. Their efforts were successfully opposed by other nations’ delegates, particularly African diplomats who spoke out against the attempt to impose Western norms on traditional societies.
