Presidential candidates discuss how they would address hunger, poverty

The Circle of Protection, an ecumenical coalition that supports federal anti-poverty programs, has asked presidential candidates, "What would you do as president to offer help and opportunity to hungry and poor people in the United States and around the world?"

Seven presidential candidates-- five Republicans and two Democrats-- responded to the request.

The Circle of Protection's steering committee includes leaders of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops and Catholic Charities USA.

    The Contract with America requirement for people to work or go to training if they are to get welfare was a great success. People learned the ennobling aspect of work. Obama ended this requirement, so we now have more people stuck on welfare.
