Cardinal Parolin: address shortcomings of ‘prevalent economic model’ with Catholic teaching

May 27, 2015

Speaking at a conference sponsored by the Centesimus Annus Pro Pontifice foundation, the Vatican’s Secretary of State emphasized the importance of the “dignity of the human person and the promotion of the common good” in Catholic teaching on the economy.

“We live in a time in which, unfortunately, the prevalent economic model reveals numerous shortcomings, dysfunctions and deviations which weigh heavily on the state of the planet’s health,” he added as he cited Pope Francis’s analysis of the “culture of waste” and “idolatry of money.”

The situation, said Cardinal Parolin, calls for “the moral formation of individual persons … at every level, which can lead them to rediscover the meaning of personal and collective work in the service of integral human development.”
