Belgium’s bishops call for nuclear disarmament

May 27, 2015

As an international conference on nuclear nonproliferation concluded, Belgium’s bishops issued a statement calling for universal nuclear disarmament.

At the earlier time, the bishops stated, the Holy See tolerated the possession of nuclear weapons for deterrence so long so long as nations worked progressively toward disarmament.

In the past year, the bishops continued, Pope Francis stated that resources are in essence being taken from the poor when they are instead spent on nuclear weapons. This, said the bishops, leads to “very serious ” questions about the morality of even the possession of nuclear weapons.

The bishops concluded their May 22 statement by calling upon the Belgian government to work towards the abolition of nuclear weapons.

It might be more profitable for the Belgian bishops to work first towards the abolition of greed, acedia, wrath, pride, envy, lust, and gluttony. The rest will follow. Nuclear weapons are in a way like firearms. Just as a gun in the hands of a trained 100-lb woman can neutralize a 200-lb aggressor, the threat of nuclear conflict has been able to hold larger armies at bay for 70 years. As long as there are bullies and tyrants, there will be a need for an effective counterforce.
