Pakistan: mob burns Christian homes after man charged with blaspheming Qu'ran

May 25, 2015

Angry Muslims looted and burned the homes of Christians in Dhup Sarri Lahore, Pakistan, after a troubled young man was accused of blaspheming the Qu’ran.

The violence began, the AsiaNews service reports, when rumors arose that a young man with a history of drug use and mental problems had burned papers on which verses of the Qu’ran were printed. When police declined to press charges in the absence of evidence, a mob assembled, and attacked the Christian neighborhood.

Before police restored order, several homes had been burned, the local Catholic church vandalized, and families threatened. The fate of the young man accused of blasphemy is unknown.
