Dialogue with Islam more necessary than ever, says Vatican cardinal

May 15, 2015

The Council of the Bishops’ Conferences of Europe has sponsored a three-day meeting at the Abbey of St. Maurice in Switzerland devoted to Muslims in Europe.

Alluding to the persecution of Christians in the Middle East, Cardinal Jean-Louis Tauran, president of the Pontifical Council for Interreligious Dialogue, said that “dialogue is more necessary than ever. Firstly, because the vast majority of Muslims do not recognize themselves in these barbaric events; then, because to pursue dialogue, even in a context of persecution, can become a sign of hope.”

Europe’s Muslim communities “must tackle the extremists and terrorists who seek religious justification for their actions,” he added. “In each case, the spontaneous question arises: how to be a Muslim and become a European?”

Is it really true the vast majority of Muslims do not recognize themselves in the barbaric persecution of Christians or is this projected wishful thinking on our part? Dialog can only be of benefit if it is bilateral and I am not sure it is. I don't see any evidence of condemnation of the barbaric ISIS in Muslim communities. Dialog is not a magic bullet and its true form it is a forum for a confrontation of truth-claims as St. Francis did with the Sultan.

"How to be a Muslim and become an European"? That's a concern for the eurocracy, not for a bishop.
