Tighter security at papal audience as officials test new plans

May 13, 2015

The police presence was noticeably heavier for the regular weekly papal audience on May 13, as Vatican and Italian police forces introduced new security arrangements.

Police closed off vehicular traffic on streets leading to St. Peter’s Square, and visitors had their handbags searched. The precautions, which snarled traffic for several blocks around the Vatican, were explained as a test of procedures that security officials are planning to implement during the Jubilee Year, when large crowds are expected at the Vatican.

Vatican officials have acknowledged reports of threats made against the Vatican and Pope Francis by Islamic jihadists, but say that they have not received credible information about any specific plans for a terror attack.
