Curb costs of church construction, Indian cardinal orders pastors
May 12, 2015
The leader of India’s Syro-Malabar Catholic Church has asked pastors to refrain from excessive spending on new church buildings.
Cardinal George Alencherry, the Major Archbishop of Ernakulam-Angamaly, spoke in response to criticisms of spending on elaborate new churches. A spokesman for the Syro-Malabar Church said that pastors and parish councils would be expected to abide by existing rules that call for simplicity in construction, careful planning to ensure that the buildings are designed for pastoral use, and monitoring to deter budget overruns.
