New member of CDF does not flinch from controversial issues

May 08, 2015

Archbishop Anthony Fisher of Sydney, Australia, who this week was appointed by Pope Francis to the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, does not shy away from controversial theological issues, Vatican Radio notes in a profile of the Dominican.

Speaking about the discussions at the Synod of Bishops, Archbishop Fisher asks rhetorically: “Is the whole idea of marriage, something that is infinitely flexible? Or is there an intrinsic meaning to marriage, or something about the anthropology of human beings and the way they relate that rightly puts a limit on what we consider a marriage?”

Archbishop Fisher, who holds an Oxford doctorate in bioethics, said that difficult moral questions arise in that field “every month, every year,” and the Church must be prepared to address them.

The Australian archbishop was named as a new member of the CDF along with Archbishop Ronald Minnerath of Dijon, France.
