One of the foremost representatives of liberation theology, Father Gustavo Gutierrez, will address a meeting of Caritas International at the Vatican next week.
The Peruvian scholar, who has insisted that liberation theology is based on the teachings of Vatican II rather than the theories of Marx, will speak at a press conference sponsored by the international Catholic consortium of relief agencies.
Father Gutierrez traveled to Rome last year to participate in a press conference launching a new book edited by his friend and former student, Cardinal Gerhard Müller, who is now the prefect of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith. Father Gutierrez had also contributed to that volume, Poor for the Poor: the Mission of the Church.
