Moroccan government minister's polygamous plan stirs public debate

April 24, 2015

The Moroccan government has been shaken by news that two cabinet ministers plan to be married, with the man involved taking his 2nd wife.

Habib Choubani, the minister for civil-society relations, has become engaged to Soumia Benkhaldoun, the minister for higher education. Choubani, who is already married, brought his wife with him when he proposed to Benkhaldoun. Although Islam allows men to have as many as four wives, the relationship between the two political leaders has roused controversy, in part because they were linked in rumors before Benkhaldoun divorced her husband last year.

This might be news in the West, but as pointed out in the article, why would an Islamic be concerned? This academic year I opened our departmental seminar to cultural as well as technical presentations. During a discussion of Islamic matrimony, I gathered that this union is a purely civil action that does not involve God. If this is actually the case, then as I was told in a follow-up question, divorce and multiple marriages are as common as paying your annual automobile license tag fee.
