Italian court: sex-change operation does not annul marriage
April 22, 2015
An Italian court has ruled that a sex-change operation does not make a marriage invalid, but noted that the ruling does not suggest legal approval of same-sex marriage.
The odd ruling, from a court in Emilia-Romagna, involves a marriage in which the husband chose to undergo a sex-change operation and asked to be registered legally as a woman. When the government’s interior ministry said that the marriage was now invalid, the couple lodged an appeal against what they called an “imposed divorce.”
