Priests are called to be disciples and shepherds, says cardinal

April 01, 2015

Reflecting on Pope Francis’s teaching on priestly spirituality, the prefect of the Congregation for the Clergy said at a conference in Florence that priests are first called to be disciples of the Lord.

The priest, said Cardinal Beniamino Stella, is then called to be a shepherd, “not with the cold logic of the ‘manager’ who looks after the affairs of his ‘company,’ but with the care of the father who leads his children home.”

Priests, he continued, are not called to be impersonal dispensers of charity but to manifest the face of Christ in “truly human” relationships. When, the priesthood is lived in a positive, joyful way, it becomes “prophetic.”
